Every recipe in this book started the same way — as a seed in the ground.
Over the course of this project, pupils in France, Poland and Romania grew potatoes, cabbages, buckwheat and apples in their own school gardens and orchards, then carried their harvest into the kitchen to see what it could become. The result is a collection of 33 recipes, one for every way three countries found to turn the same handful of ingredients into something worth sharing.
Inside, you’ll find dishes shaped by each region’s own traditions and tastes, cooked and tested by the pupils themselves — proof that a shared table can hold a lot of different stories at once. More than a recipe book, it’s a record of a year spent learning patience in the garden, care in the kitchen, and friendship across borders.

Every crop in this project came with a lesson plan behind it.
Across our partner schools in France, Poland and Romania, teachers built practical, ready-to-run scenarios around the plants growing just outside the classroom door: getting to know an apple orchard at harvest time, growing buckwheat from seed to flour, raising summer and autumn cabbage, and following potatoes through every season, from spring planting to autumn storage and winter sprouting.
Each scenario sets out exactly what a teacher needs to run the activity: objectives, timing, materials, step-by-step tasks for teacher and student, and background reading to tie it all together, whether that’s the history of the potato, the biology of buckwheat, or the nutritional value of cabbage. Many also connect naturally to other subjects, from maths and life sciences to history and language classes, and several end with the best part of any garden lesson — tasting what was grown.
